When you are in a conversation you have to build a series of unpredictable sentences fast . Your ability to do so determines how well you can speak . In order to build a desired sentence you have to recall the correct structure and the right set of words. Your ability to recall depends on how well you have retained . Retention depends a lot on repeated input .

Reading helps greatly in retention . When you read continuously you run into the same words and structures again and again . That helps a lot in retention . Those people who read a lot are also good speakers because they have greater choice of words to express themselves. Your ability to read would open many doors for you . You can select those books and magazines written in Spanish that interest you .

Reading leads to better understanding of the Spanish language and would also lead to better listening comprehension . We all know how important listening comprehension is for being in a meaningful conversation . Practice can not help you if you have a poor vocabulary . You speak a language to express yourself . Enough studies have shown that you need A vocabulary of 1500 words to do so . Vocabulary and fluency have a strong correlation in Language learning .

Self expression is the main reason to speak a language . Self expression requires a good vocabulary and reading is a great way to build it . When You are reading something with interest you are using the language to do so and thus you build a relationship with the language . Mimicry , roleplay and grammar drills are not very conducive to building that relationship. Reading is therefore a cornerstone of our teaching philosophy at the Language Institute of Georgia .
